Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, used his Twitter account on July 21, 2025, to address what he described as misconceptions about Medicaid, work requirements, and Republican health policy.
In one tweet posted at 13:53 UTC, Harris stated: "MYTH: “Work requirements are cruel and dangerous.” FACT: False. Work requirements for able-bodied adults help lift people out of poverty — promoting independence, not dependency."
He followed up with another post at the same time addressing claims regarding Medicaid coverage: "MYTH vs. FACT: The Left is lying about Medicaid, work requirements & rural hospitals. Here’s the truth MYTH: “Republicans are slashing Medicaid and kicking people off coverage.” FACT: False. No one who is eligible for Medicaid is being removed. We are targeting"
A third tweet posted seconds later reinforced his stance on Republican health care priorities: "MYTH: “Republicans are putting lives at risk.” FACT: False: Republicans are fighting to save Medicaid for those who truly need it — including pregnant women, the elderly, the disabled, and those in poverty."
Harris has served in Congress since replacing Frank Kratovil in 2011 and previously held seats in both the Maryland House of Representatives and Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a BS degree from Johns Hopkins University.
