Rep. Andy Harris, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland's 1st district since 2011, recently shared his views on Medicaid and economic policies in Maryland through a series of tweets. Harris, who has served in Congress since replacing Frank Kratovil in 2011 and previously served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011, expressed concerns about the allocation of Medicaid funds and the state's fiscal management.
On May 14, 2025, Rep. Harris highlighted an issue regarding Medicaid spending during an appearance on NEWSMAX. He stated, “We don’t get to the heart of the matter which is we are paying more for able-bodied people on Medicaid than we pay for the disabled, pregnant women, children, and those who truly need it.”
Later that day, Harris criticized Maryland's fiscal policies under Democratic leadership. In his tweet at 16:48 UTC, he remarked that "Tax-and-spend Democrats in Maryland continue to strip the state of any chance at economic prosperity." He further commented on the negative impact of what he described as "Maryland’s out-of-control deficit," calling it detrimental to business and the state's economic health.
In another tweet posted at 16:57 UTC on May 14th, Rep. Harris responded to a statement by Secretary Kennedy regarding Medicaid coverage for vulnerable groups. He affirmed his stance by saying “@SecKennedy you’re absolutely right. No pregnant women or single mom who qualifies under traditional Medicaid is going to loose coverage." He criticized Democratic talking points as "absolutely ridiculous."
Rep. Andy Harris was born in New York City in 1957 and currently resides in Cambridge. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree earned in 1977, he continues to be an active voice in legislative matters concerning both healthcare and economic policy.
