Harford Community College issued the following announcement on July 12.
Harford Community College student Giavanna Tserkis was sworn in on July 10 as this year's Student Commissioner for the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Gia, who was nominated last semester by faculty and members of the Executive Leadership Team at the College, will serve a one-year term. MHEC is responsible for the planning, supervision and coordination of Maryland's post-secondary education system. The Commission consists of twelve members appointed by the Governor with Senate approval, one of whom is a student.
During Student Advocacy Day 2018, Gia testified in Annapolis in support of the recently enacted Maryland Community College Promise Scholarships, a program to help eligible students attend community college.
Gia, who works as an Administrative Assistant to the President's Office, will also serve as a student orientation leader at Harford Community College this year.
