City of Havre de Grace issued the following announcement on July 12.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Governor Larry Hogan for coming to Havre de Grace last evening and celebrating First Fridays with us.

Governor Hogan, led by Mayor Martin through our Arts and Entertainment District, was impressed to see the greatest parts of our city, including The Culture Center at The Opera House, the American Legion, live entertainment (including Governor Hogan participating in a drum circle) and most importantly, the opportunity to meet several of our volunteers and artists who make our city thrive.Department of Public Works:

• Thanks to a grant the Green Team has been awarded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust there is a new pollinator garden on the site of 319 Lafayette Street. The pollinator garden will treat the water quality as will the rain barrels we will install, which will allow for the reuse of the rain runoff from the building for watering the plants.

• Plant Smart – Use native plants in your landscape that grow here naturally and have adapted to Maryland’s climate and soil. Lady Bird Johnson Native Plant Database There are many sources for finding the perfect native plant selection to enhance your landscape and help improve the drainage.

•WATCH for other stormwater pollution removal projects happening in the City. The smallest effort counts!!

•A DNR/City regenerative stormwater improvement project at the Concord cove near the Maritime Museum will begin shortly.

•Please report any illicit activity on the storm drains by calling City Hall at 410-939-1800 or by using the “REPORT” button on our website.

PARKS:

•New sod to beautify Tydings Park has been established in areas.

•Dredging of the channel at Tydings Marina is on schedule, and permits will be issued in July.

•Pickle Ball courts are under construction at Tydings Park.

WATER:

•The construction of 8 inch water line on a segment of Alliance Street and a segment of Lafayette Street is in the final stages of completion.

SEWER:

•The City is seeking funding (RAD) to replace the aging sewer line and improve service on Warren Street from Stokes Street to Union Avenue.

Summer Student Workers joined our team this week and will be here for the next several weeks. They will be assisting with many projects within the department.

DPW Crews are currently working on the following:

– Blacktopping at: Lewis Street at Strawberry Lane, Lewis Lane Extension – 3

areas

– Concrete Work – Sidewalk pads replaced at 400 block of S. Washington Street

– Sinkhole Repair – Revolution Street at Washington Street

– Weeding – at all City Parks

– Watering the sod at Tydings Park – daily

– Fire Hydrant Replacement Project at Juniata & Bourbon Street

– Sewer Maintenance – involves flushing lines to prevent backups – all around

town.

Department of Planning:

We are officially into the 2018 hurricane season. Several communities across the state have experienced devastating floods just from our recent spring rains. Please keep storm drains clear of leaves, debris, and grass clippings. Check out the Floodplain Management page on the City website for helpful information. FEMA’s flood insurance is available to anyone, including renters, even if you are not in a mapped flood zone. You may also call Marisa Willis or Shane Grimm, (410) 939-1800, if you have any questions on the Special Flood Hazard Areas within the City.

The most effective method of controlling mosquitoes is reducing or eliminating the containers which are the source of the problem. Draining or removal of water holding containers, even on a localized basis, will produce remarkable long-term reductions in mosquito annoyance. The list of breeding sites is extensive and includes any water holding containers, but the primary sites in residential areas include clogged rain gutters, tires, buckets, cans, bottles, boats, flower pots, bird baths, outdoor statuary, ornamental pools, plastic or canvas tarpaulins, children’s toys, rain barrels, and pet food and water dishes.

Signs of the season downtown

The City of Havre de Grace Independence Day celebrations brought large crowds to the City for the parade and fireworks. It also seems to have brought a number of new signs in windows – from building permits to “coming soon,” to expansions for various businesses. To keep track of all that’s going on the Havre de Grace Office of Economic Development has compiled the following to look for:

• Expansion of Coakley’s Pub with the opening of The Yard at 406 St. John Street, check out the patio and new overhang

• Flawless Fotos Photography has opened at 327 St. John Street

• Nails by Nikki at 425 St. John Street is coming soon

• Did you notice the building permit in the window at 320 St. John Street – work is progressing nicely – details to follow

• It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint and a few minor repairs can do as evidenced on the façade of the former State Theater at 325 St. John Street

• During the Independence Day Parade the proprietors of Natural Geometry set up a tent for a sneak peek at their offers at 324 N. Union Avenue

• The sign is up for an old favorite to be new to you again in the form of George’s Famous Chicken at 109 N. Washington Street, we’re looking forward to it!

• Cornerstone Liquors at 419 N. Union Avenue opened over the Independence Day Celebration weekend to a host of new customers who reported themselves delighted with the shop

• Bring the little ones out to enjoy the new City Playroom at 102 N. Washington street, now open

• Keep your eyes on the corner of Union Avenue and Franklin Street for the new and greatly expanded offerings available through ION Massage and Moon & Sea Creations

• Get ye down to the water to marvel at the beautiful Schooner Martha White operated by Working Sail Benefit, LLC., offering private charters, full or half day excursions and more just off the shore at Concord Point Park
