Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland's 1st district, voiced his views on immigration and public safety through a series of tweets. The discourse highlights his criticism of fellow Maryland politician Chris Van Hollen's actions regarding immigration-related issues and contrasts them with those of the Trump Administration.

On April 17, 2025, Harris published a tweet criticizing Chris Van Hollen's efforts in El Salvador. Harris stated, "While Chris Van Hollen was in El Salvador fighting to bring an illegal immigrant back to Maryland, the Trump Administration was busy removing a dangerous one off our streets. It's clear who’s concerned about the safety of Marylanders—and it’s not the Maryland Democrats." Harris's tweet reflects a comparative perspective regarding immigration priorities.

The same day, Harris posted a follow-up tweet underscoring an irony he perceives in Van Hollen's actions. He tweeted, “It’s ironic that [Van Hollen] is insisting on talking to an illegal immigrant in El Salvador who is a citizen of El Salvador, but is not interested in talking to Rachel Morin's family.” He provided this comment during an interview with Matthew Foldi in the DC Reporter.

Continuing his critique the following day, on April 18, 2025, Harris expanded his comments to emphasize a perceived neglect of local issues by certain politicians. He tweeted, "Imagine if Senator Van Hollen cared as much about the families of Rachel Morin and Kayla Hamilton. Leftist politicians only want to talk about bringing illegal immigrants back to Maryland." This statement articulates his criticism of the attention given to immigration concerns over local constituents' issues.

Andy Harris, representing Maryland's 1st district since 2011, succeeded Frank Kratovil in the United States Congress. He previously served in the Maryland House of Representatives and Maryland Senate. Harris, a New York City native born in 1957, resides in Cambridge and is an alumnus of Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 1977.
