Rep. Andy Harris, who has been serving Maryland's 1st congressional district since 2011 after succeeding Frank Kratovil, recently shared insights on financial and trade policy matters through a series of tweets. Harris, 66, a resident of Cambridge and an alumnus of Johns Hopkins University, holds strong views on the economic strategies currently in play.
On April 9, 2025, Rep. Harris commented on the persistent issue of federal debt, stating, "I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." He attributes this metaphor to the longstanding strategy that Congress has used, which has contributed to the increase of the federal debt to $36 trillion, a situation he describes as "unsustainable."
Later the same day, Harris addressed the Senate's approach to budget management, tweeting, "$4 billion in spending cuts in the Senate budget resolution is less than one day’s growth in the budget deficit. This spending addiction has to stop now." He is critical of what he perceives as inadequate measures to tackle the growing budget deficit.
In a subsequent tweet on April 9, 2025, he shifted focus to trade policy, acknowledging the President's efforts, "The President won a clear mandate last November and he is delivering on it. The changes to industrialization in America took decades to move overseas and the President is working in good faith as he negotiates trade policy for Americans over the next 90 days." Harris appears to show support for the administration's steps towards reindustrializing America through trade negotiations.
