Rep. Andy Harris, MD, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Maryland's 1st district, shared his views on Medicaid and government shutdowns through a series of tweets. Rep. Harris, who has been in office since 2011 after succeeding Frank Kratovil, is known for his direct communication style on social media.

On March 12, 2025, Rep. Harris tweeted about Medicaid's evolving demographic composition: "Medicaid was intended to assist vulnerable populations like the disabled, pregnant women, children and people in poverty. Today, able-bodied adults are on course to become the largest subgroup on Medicaid." He further discussed this issue alongside colleagues @RepChipRoy and @RepEricBurlison.

In another tweet posted on March 13, 2025, Rep. Harris addressed concerns regarding a potential government shutdown by quoting Chuck Schumer: “A shutdown harms the economy. A shutdown causes costs to spike.” He questioned whether Schumer would vote for a government shutdown that could lead to federal worker furloughs.
