One Hour Heating & Air issued the following announcement on Sept. 6.
With Bel Air temperatures still in the 90’s, it’s hard to believe you’ll be turning on the furnace any time soon. But fall begins in just a couple weeks, and we can guarantee the chilly air won’t be far behind. To avoid problems with your HVAC system when you switch from cooling to heating, follow these tips from One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning experts.
Replace Your Filter
Your filter has been working hard this summer to trap allergens and other airborne particles. If it’s clogged, it will make your furnace work harder to heat the home, which will result in higher energy bills. Consider a HEPA filter to trap the tiniest particles and reduce allergies this fall and winter.
Seal Air Leaks
If you weren’t able to do so during summer, check for gaps around windows and doors where you can feel air coming in. One trick is to hold a candle in front of a window, and if it flickers you can assume air is getting in. Install weather stripping under doors and use caulk to seal gaps around windows. This will trap heat in your home and keep cold air out, allowing your furnace to work much more efficiently.
Ensure Vents are Clear
Rugs and furniture should not be blocking airflow from vents or registers, so go around the house and make sure all of them are out in the open.
Replace Thermostat Batteries or Upgrade Your Thermostat
If it’s hard to remember the last time you changed the batteries in your programmable thermostat, it’s probably a good idea to put new ones in. And if you’ve been considering a smart Wi-Fi thermostat, now is a good time since you can get used to making adjustments on your phone or tablet before the really cold weather hits.
