Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, recently highlighted federal and state initiatives to support local agriculture and rural communities in a series of posts on social media.

On August 8, 2025, Harris announced a new initiative involving the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Maryland Department of Agriculture: “USDA, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Agriculture, will launch a year-long pilot program to purchase up to $2 million worth of Chesapeake Bay blue catfish.”

Later that day, Harris emphasized efforts to support rural America by sharing details from an official visit: “They say rural America is forgotten—but @SecRollins is making sure it’s remembered.” He invited viewers to watch coverage from Maryland’s Eastern Shore alongside USDA Secretary Rollins and referenced ongoing efforts by the Trump Administration for watermen, farmers, and working families.

In another post on August 8, Harris responded positively to related developments: “This is great news!”

Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st District in Congress since replacing Frank Kratovil in 2011. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University (1977).
