Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on July 30, 2025, addressing tax policy for restaurant workers and advocating for election integrity legislation.
On July 30, 2025, Harris stated: “Maryland’s restaurant workers work hard for every dollar they earn, and they shouldn’t have to share their tips with the IRS. Thanks to the OBBB, qualified tips are no longer taxed, putting more money into the hands of servers, bartenders and hotel staff across our state.” In this message, he referenced the OBBB and its impact on tip taxation for service industry employees.
Later that day, Harris addressed voting regulations: “Election integrity should never be controversial. You need ID to do just about anything — voting should be no different. The Senate must pass the SAVE Act and put voters before politics.” This post urged passage of the SAVE Act in the Senate and emphasized his position on voter identification requirements.
Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st district since 2011 after replacing Frank Kratovil in Congress. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of both the Maryland House of Representatives and Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977.
