Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 1st district, used his social media platform on October 9, 2025, to comment on ongoing debates over government spending and health care subsidies.

On October 9, Harris posted: “Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris said Democrats want to “continue a COVID-era insurance-company giveaway scheme,” opposing the extension of pandemic-era Obamacare subsidies and linking it to the broader spending fight.” The statement comes as lawmakers debate whether to extend health insurance subsidies introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Later that day, Harris addressed the ongoing government shutdown, writing: “As the shutdown stretched into its second week, Rep. Andy Harris said House Republicans had already passed a bill to keep the government open and blamed Senate Democrats for blocking it. He argued the shutdown was avoidable and politically driven.” The post referenced partisan disagreements in Congress that have led to an extended federal government shutdown.
