Rep. Andy Harris, MD, who has represented Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress since 2011, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing issues ranging from government shutdowns to health care policy and local spending.
On November 7, 2025, Harris criticized state leaders for their role in an ongoing government shutdown. He wrote: “Marylanders have @ChrisVanHollen, @Sen_Alsobrooks and @GovWesMoore — who’s supporting their continued votes to keep the government shut down — to blame for this mess. It’s time for our two senators to stop grandstanding and vote to reopen the government.”
Later that day, Harris addressed health care reform and insurance premiums in another post: “Obamacare is only 7% of Americans. Literally almost 100% of Americans need relief from their health care policy premiums, not just 7%. We need to have free market solutions that bring down the cost of health care for every American, not just the 7%.”
On November 9, Harris commented on public spending by Baltimore City officials: “And this is how Democrat leaders in Baltimore City spend your hard-earned taxpayer dollars? Let them eat cake……”
Harris has served as a member of Congress since defeating Frank Kratovil in 2011. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 1999 until his election to federal office. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.
