Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, posted a series of tweets on September 26, 2025, criticizing Democratic lawmakers for their stance on government shutdowns and immigration policy.
In his first tweet at 18:03 UTC, Harris wrote: “The Democrats are on the record opposing government shutdowns. Yet now they are planning to shut the government down because President Trump won’t give into their demands to force taxpayers to fund benefits to illegal aliens. Read their own words.”
Later that evening at 19:11 UTC, Harris stated: “The contrast could not be clearer: while the Left’s radical ideology excuses lawlessness and undermines those sworn to protect us, the Freedom Caucus stands firmly with ICE, law enforcement, and the American people.”
At 21:35 UTC on the same day, he added: “The Democrats would prefer to shut the government down to appease their radical left-wing groups. That’s how out of touch the Democrats are with hard-working American taxpayers.”
Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st District in Congress since defeating Frank Kratovil in 2011. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature from 1999 through 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a BS from Johns Hopkins University.
