Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on October 3, 2025, criticizing Democratic lawmakers over government funding decisions and healthcare provisions.
In a tweet published at 12:06 p.m. UTC, Harris stated: “Democrats shut down the government to demand MORE spending AND taxpayer funded healthcare for illegal aliens. These decisions are wildly unpopular and deeply harmful to the American people.”
Later that day, at 5:20 p.m. UTC, he commented on the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program in relation to a House-passed continuing resolution (CR): “The House-passed CR fully funds WIC—a program Democrats themselves have demanded be protected at every turn. It is shocking the Democrats would now vote to shut down the government, threatening the very WIC funding they claim to champion.”
At 6:02 p.m. UTC, Harris issued another statement clarifying his earlier remarks: “Correction: They’re fighting to fund health care for illegal aliens — and they shut down the government to do it.”
Andy Harris has served as a member of Congress since 2011 after replacing Frank Kratovil and previously held positions in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature from 1999 through 2011. He was born in New York City in 1957 and currently resides in Cambridge. Harris earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1977.
