Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing sanctuary jurisdictions, immigration policy, and education standards.

On January 31, 2026, Harris commented on sanctuary jurisdictions with a focus on Prince George’s County. He wrote: “And this is why it’s dangerous to live in a sanctuary jurisdiction like Prince George’s County—unless you’re an illegal alien who is convicted of stabbing people. Then you’re totally safe and protected.”

Continuing his remarks about immigration enforcement, Harris stated on February 2, 2026: “We have millions of people who broke the law. We should prioritize getting the people out who are the worst criminals — but in the end, if someone comes to the United States illegally, they should probably return to their home country and follow the proper, legal process to enter”.

In a post dated February 3, 2026, Harris addressed education policy regarding student protests and academic performance: “The federal government should de-fund any high school that condones this in any way. When math competency is well below 30% in these schools, they should be promoting math instead of promoting protests.”

Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st district since 2011 after succeeding Frank Kratovil. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University (1977).
