Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media platform to address recent events in Israel and ongoing political disputes in Maryland. Harris, who has served in Congress since 2011 after succeeding Frank Kratovil, posted a series of messages on October 7 and 8, 2025.
On October 7, Harris commented on the anniversary of attacks in Israel, writing, “On October 7th, Hamas terrorists unleashed pure evil on innocent men, women, and children in Israel. We remember the lives lost, the families shattered, and the hostages who remain in captivity. The United States stands with Israel as she defends her people and fights to bring https://t.co/y9phhB9lxM”.
Later that day, Harris criticized Democratic lawmakers over budget negotiations and their proposed spending policies. He stated, “Democrats are demanding $1.5 TRILLION in new spending with no way to pay for it. They even want illegal immigrants to qualify for Medicaid, Medicare, and Obamacare. Those are unreasonable demands and Maryland Democrats shut the government down over them. https://t.co/EaukO8ocad”.
On October 8, Harris continued to address the government shutdown, posting, ” BREAKING: Chairman Harris and Maryland Freedom Caucus Members are calling on ALL Maryland Democrats to END their shutdown and reopen the government. More https://t.co/9D0tuf2ust”.
Harris’s comments come amid his long tenure in public service. Before joining Congress in 2011, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Harris, born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University (1977).
