Rep. Andy Harris, MD, currently serving as the U.S. Representative for Maryland’s 1st district, posted a series of statements on October 15, 2025, addressing the ongoing federal government shutdown and its impact on Maryland residents.
In his first post of the day, Harris emphasized Republican unity in seeking an end to the shutdown. He stated, “Today, Republicans are united in one goal, ending this shutdown, responsibly reining in reckless federal spending, and getting the federal government working again for the American people.” (October 15, 2025).
Later that afternoon, Harris criticized Maryland Democrats for their role in the shutdown. He wrote, “Every Maryland Democrat voted to shut the government down, and now they’re criticizing the very consequences their actions set in motion.” (October 15, 2025).
Addressing the local impact of the shutdown, Harris pointed to the large number of federal employees in Maryland. In his third post, he stated, “Because so many Marylanders are federal employees, I think that the two senators should realize that will harm a lot of Marylanders.” (October 15, 2025).
Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st district in Congress since 2011, after succeeding Frank Kratovil. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957, Harris is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and currently resides in Cambridge.
