The House Freedom Caucus has announced its support for a longer-term Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government, aiming to keep discretionary spending at current levels and prevent an omnibus spending bill. The group said it voted unanimously with other Republicans and President Trump to fund the government through November 20, 2025.
Despite this action, the statement criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for not agreeing to extend funding, resulting in a continued government shutdown. “Over a month later, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer outrageously still refuses to extend current funding levels, which Democrats have previously voted for, so the government remains shut down,” the caucus stated.
The caucus expressed willingness to back a CR extending as far into 2026 as possible, ideally beyond the November 2026 election. This measure would maintain federal discretionary spending at amounts set since 2023 and block what it described as “a budget-busting, pork-filled, lobbyist handout omnibus” in late 2025. The group noted its past efforts: “We successfully prevented an omnibus in September 2024, December 2024, and March 2025, thereby keeping spending flat; we cannot now reverse course by allowing spending increases after the progress we have made to date with DOGE and rescissions.”
According to the statement: “We believe a full-year Continuing Resolution will provide President Trump and Republicans the stability and leverage to continue our work to cut spending and rein in out-of-control woke, wasteful, and weaponized government.”
