Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly announced on May 12 the appointment of BangTam Miller to fill a vacancy on the Harford County Board of Education.
Miller, a small business owner and founder and president of the nonprofit 755 Alliance, Inc., previously worked for Harford County Public Schools for 26 years. Her roles included teacher, assistant principal, and administrator in both the Office of Accountability and Department of Human Resources. She holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from McDaniel College.
“Bangtam is a successful business owner who has volunteered selflessly through her nonprofit to enhance the quality of life in our community,” Cassilly said. “Her strong business background, integrity, leadership skills and her deep knowledge of the school system will be an asset to our school board.”
Cassilly’s appointments to the school board require approval by a majority vote from the Harford County Council. The council recently rejected two previous appointees at a time when the board is selecting a new superintendent for a four-year term.
“I am disappointed that Council President Vincenti has led the effort to reject two of my prior well-qualified appointees to appease union leaders, making it unnecessarily difficult to get qualified community members to volunteer for public service,” Cassilly said. “I would like to thank BangTam for her courage in stepping up and I encourage the council to confirm this highly qualified candidate without delay.”
The decision comes as Harford County faces important decisions regarding educational leadership.
