Congressman Andy Harris welcomed the U.S. Army’s decision on Apr. 23 to establish the Army Data Operations Command (ADOC) at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland’s First District, following his advocacy for the site to become the command’s permanent home.
The move is seen as significant for national security and local development, placing a major data and cyber operations center within Maryland’s First District. Congressman Harris had previously sent a letter to Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll in February, emphasizing Aberdeen Proving Ground’s capabilities to support ADOC’s mission.
“ADOC belongs at Aberdeen Proving Ground. This decision puts a critical national security capability in Maryland’s First District, where the expertise and infrastructure already exist to get the job done, and reinforces APG’s role at the forefront of data, cyber, and network operation,” Harris said.
Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st district in Congress since replacing Frank Kratovil in 2011 according to available records. He previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature before entering Congress according to Wikipedia.
Born in New York City in 1957, Harris currently resides in Cambridge as noted by his congressional biography. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977 according to Johns Hopkins University.
Observers expect that establishing ADOC at Aberdeen Proving Ground will further reinforce its position as a key location for military data and cyber operations.
