Congressman Andy Harris has criticized the Maryland Democratic delegation for voting to keep the federal government closed, raising concerns about possible delays in SNAP and EBT benefits for families in the state.
Speaking during a recent Telephone Town Hall, Harris pointed to a shortfall in SNAP reserves that could impact when EBT cards are reloaded if the shutdown persists. He said, “That reserve is going to run out. It’s going to run out sometime in November – could be very early November. They may not even know until next week. In that case, those EBT cards won’t be loaded until the government is reopened. That’s one of the reasons why I voted to keep the government running.”
Harris, who has represented Maryland’s 1st district in Congress since 2011, replaced Frank Kratovil and previously served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. He was born in New York City in 1957, is currently 66 years old, and lives in Cambridge. Harris holds a BS from Johns Hopkins University, earned in 1977.
