Washington, D.C. â€“ WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) announced Alyssa Scalia as the winner of the First Congressional District of Maryland’s 2023 Congressional Art Competition. Entitled “The Heroes Behind the Heroes” Alyssa’s work will be diplayed in the halls of Congress for one year, and she will be honored at the annual award winner’s ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

“Congratulations to Alyssa on her well-deserved win and many thanks to all the contestants from Maryland’s First District for submitting their pieces of art. Selecting a winner each year is always a challenging choice, but I chose Alyssa’s work because I have always believed that the best pieces of artwork are a reflection not only of their outward beauty but of their inward significance. “The Heroes Behind the Heroes” is a beautiful tribute to the brave men and women who serve our Country and to their families who support them, many times from afar, while they fight to preserve our freedom.”
