Congressman Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, issued a statement regarding the potential government shutdown. Harris said, “The only reason a government shutdown is on the table is because Democrats are demanding $1.5 trillion in unrelated spending demands including healthcare handouts for illegal immigrants. I voted to keep the government open and funded. The blame for this shutdown rests squarely with those who demanded trillions in unrelated, policy demands.”
Harris has served in Congress since 2011 after replacing Frank Kratovil. Before his time in Congress, he was a member of the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011 and previously served in the Maryland House of Representatives. Harris, age 66, was born in New York City in 1957 and currently lives in Cambridge. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
