Chairman Andy Harris and the Maryland Freedom Caucus have called on Maryland Democrats to end what they describe as a government shutdown, following a press conference by Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland Delegation at BWI-Marshall. The group criticized Maryland’s Democratic delegation for what they say is a failure to support federal workers, despite public statements suggesting otherwise.
According to Congressman Andy Harris, “Despite the high number of federal workers in our state, I was the only member of our delegation to vote to keep the government open. Governor Moore and Maryland Democrats talk about ‘supporting workers,’ but their actions tell a different story. Every Member of the Maryland Delegation voted to shut the government down and Maryland’s Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks have voted to shut down the government five times – and by all accounts will continue to do so. They could end this shutdown today if they truly cared about Maryland families.”
Members of the Maryland Freedom Caucus also issued a statement: “Governor Wes Moore runs to a microphone instead of leading. Federal workers need Senators Alsobrooks and Van Hollen to vote to reopen the government, not demand taxpayer-funded health insurance for illegal immigrants. Marylanders deserve leadership, not political theater.”
Andy Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st district in Congress since 2011, after replacing Frank Kratovil. He previously served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Harris was born in New York City in 1957, is currently 66 years old, lives in Cambridge, and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977.
