Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, has publicly criticized Maryland’s Democratic delegation for their role in the ongoing government shutdown through several social media posts this week.
On October 6, 2025, Harris wrote on X: “The Democrat Shutdown will have an oversize impact here in Maryland. That’s why I can’t understand why our Democratic representatives and two senators vote to allow a shutdown to keep going.”
Later that day, he continued his criticism by stating: “Every Democrat Member of Maryland’s delegation voted to shut the government down — yet now they pretend to be worried about federal workers. This conversation wouldn’t even be happening if they voted to keep the government open. @wbalradio https://t.co/yR8GefCANn”
On October 7, Harris announced his upcoming appearance on local television to discuss the issue further: ” I’ll be joining @FOXBaltimore to discuss the latest on the Democrat-led government shutdown. Tune in!”
Harris, who succeeded Frank Kratovil in Congress and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature from 1999 to 2011, has made public service a central part of his career. He was born in New York City in 1957 and resides in Cambridge. Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University (Fact sources: FACTS 1-4).
Maryland is home to many federal employees who are directly affected by government shutdowns. The ongoing debate over funding and government operations continues as lawmakers work toward a resolution.
