Rep. Andy Harris, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress from Maryland’s 1st district, shared several viewpoints regarding recent legislative and social issues through his social media posts. Harris, who replaced Frank Kratovil in 2011, continues to voice his opinions on various policy matters affecting his constituents and the broader American public.

On April 15, 2025, Harris brought attention to the purchases permitted under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). He stated, “Soft drinks are not only allowed on SNAP – they are the #1 item purchased.” Harris commended Sarah Huckabee for her initiative in submitting a waiver aimed at stopping taxpayers from subsidizing unhealthy food items such as candy and soft drinks within the program.

The following day, on April 16, 2025, Harris criticized perceived partisan silence on certain judicial matters. He claimed, “The Democrats will spend all their time defending the illegal immigrant ‘Maryland Man’ but are silent on the Maryland Mom (Rachel Morin) whose illegal immigrant murderer was just found guilty yesterday.” This statement underscored his concern about the perceived political focus on immigrant-related cases over local victim justice.

Later that day, he questioned actions by fellow Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, stating, “I don’t know what the Senator [Chris Van Hollen] is doing but he shouldn’t be spending taxpayer dollars to go after a citizen of El Salvador to bring him back to the United States.” This remark reflected Harris’s standpoint regarding the use of resources in matters involving foreign nationals being brought to the U.S.

Andy Harris, who was born in New York City, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University, earned in 1977. Before his tenure in Congress, Harris served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011.
