Rep. Andy Harris, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, addressed several political and campus issues in a series of posts on October 21, 2025.
In his first post, Harris announced a public event: “I’ll be hosting a live Telephone Town Hall tonight. Listen in as I answer questions on the Democrat-led shutdown and other important issues.

Later that day, Harris commented on the ongoing government shutdown debate in Congress, stating “It’s Senate Democrats…including Maryland’s own Senators…who keep voting to keep the government closed.” (posted at 17:34 UTC).
In a subsequent post about free speech on college campuses, Harris criticized the University of Maryland’s policy requiring additional security fees for certain student events. He wrote “The University of Maryland should reverse its decision forcing the Turning Point USA chapter to pay extra ‘security fees’ to host their on campus event.
This outrageous policy puts a price tag on free speech and is a disgrace to the University of Maryland.” (posted at 23:56 UTC).
Harris has served in Congress since replacing Frank Kratovil in 2011. Before his tenure in Washington, he was a member of both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a BS from Johns Hopkins University.
