Rep. Andy Harris, MD, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, addressed education policy and Medicaid spending in a series of posts on his official X account this week.

On July 24, 2025, Harris promoted school choice initiatives, stating, “School choice puts parents—not bureaucrats—in charge. When parents can choose the best education for their child, all schools—public and private—must compete to improve. That’s a win for every student, including those with disabilities, who will benefit from options tailored to”.

The following day, Harris responded to claims about proposed changes to Medicaid funding. On July 25, 2025, he wrote: “FACT CHECK: Medicaid spending isn’t being cut—it’s actually going UP. The Left wants you to believe conservatives are “slashing Medicaid,” but that’s false. No one eligible is losing coverage. Taxpayers deserve honesty. The only thing we’re cutting is abuse.”

Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st District in Congress since succeeding Frank Kratovil in 2011 and previously served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.
