Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on his social media account addressing issues ranging from immigration enforcement to election integrity and early childhood literacy.

On February 8, 2026, Harris questioned the role of state authorities in managing detention centers, posting: “Hmm.  Looks like it’s not ICE detention centers that are the problem in Maryland.  What’s the governor’s excuse for this?  How will he blame this on President Trump?”

The following day, February 9, 2026, Harris advocated for legislative action concerning voter identification requirements. He wrote: “Pass the SAVE Act NOW.  We must require voter ID and proof of citizenship. ONLY American citizens should vote in American elections.”

On February 10, 2026, Harris highlighted the importance of family involvement in children’s literacy development during a committee session: “In committee today, I spoke with literacy experts about how closely family life is tied to early reading success. Children whose parents read to them from a young age are much less likely to fall behind, while children growing up in single-parent households are statistically more”

Harris has served as a member of Congress since 2011 after succeeding Frank Kratovil and previously held positions in both the Maryland House of Representatives and Senate from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.
