Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, shared a series of posts on December 15, 2025, addressing topics ranging from international tragedy to local education and government oversight.

In a message posted on December 15, Harris expressed condolences for victims of violence in Australia: “As we mark the first night of Hanukkah, my prayers are with the families grieving after the tragic attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Wishing everyone a safe and peaceful Hanukkah.”

Later that day, Harris raised concerns about government program management in Maryland: “The last time it was looked into, Maryland had a 14% error rate in SNAP payments, which translates to tens of millions of dollars that shouldn’t have been paid out.” The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal aid program administered by states to help low-income individuals and families purchase food.

In another post from December 15, Harris discussed his participation in an educational event: “I was honored to join U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon in Cambridge today at Maple Elementary School and meet with teachers and students. We talked about the importance of history and civics education as we approach America’s 250th anniversary.”

Harris has served in Congress since 2011 after replacing Frank Kratovil. Before his tenure in Washington, he served in both chambers of the Maryland legislature from 1999 to 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.
