Rep. Andy Harris, MD, who represents Maryland’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing economic recovery, an art competition for students, and concerns over energy policy.
On February 25, 2026, Harris commented on recent economic progress: “We were digging out of a deep hole where just a few years ago inflation was at 9%, and a gallon of gas in Maryland was close to $4, not $3. The bottom line is that the President is making progress. He reminded everyone where we came from and what he had to do.” This statement referenced the economic challenges faced in previous years and credited the current administration with improvements.
Later that day, Harris announced the opening of the annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students in his district: “The 2026 Congressional Art Competition is now open! High school students in Maryland’s First Congressional District are invited to enter the Congressional Art Competition. The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. This year, our office’s theme”.
On February 26, 2026, Harris addressed energy policy concerns related to offshore wind projects: “Marylanders shouldn’t be stuck paying for costly offshore wind projects that raise energy prices. Our focus must be on reliable, affordable energy that actually brings utility bills down.”
Harris has served as a member of Congress since 2011 after succeeding Frank Kratovil. Before joining Congress, he served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature between 1999 and 2011. Born in New York City in 1957 and currently residing in Cambridge, Harris graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977.
