Rep. Andy Harris, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 1st district since 2011, has used his social media platform to address issues ranging from college sports recruitment to the importance of the hospitality industry and recognition of Armed Forces Day.
On May 13, 2026, Harris expressed concern about the impact of international recruitment on American student-athletes in collegiate sports. He stated, “Across NCAA sports, American student-athletes are losing scholarships and roster spots at American universities to international recruits. The SCORE Act must include language that puts American athletes first in college sports recruiting.”
Two days later, on May 14, 2026, Harris acknowledged receiving an award from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), highlighting the significance of tourism and hospitality for local economies. He wrote, “Honored to receive the @AHLA ‘Spirit of Hospitality’ Award. Places like Ocean City are built around a strong hospitality industry. On May 16, 2026, Harris marked Armed Forces Day by thanking military personnel serving nationwide and within his district: “Today, we proudly recognize Armed Forces Day and thank the men and women currently serving in uniform across every branch of the United States military. Harris was born in New York City in 1957 and currently resides in Cambridge. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature before entering Congress.
